OnePlus has just announced the release of an OxygenOS 10, a.k.a. its Android 10 skin, for the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T. You might be scratching your head at this news considering the stable Android 10 update was announced weeks ago. If that’s the case, you might have not heard that OnePlus pulled that update out due to showstopping bugs and this beta is practically a return to the drawing board.
The first issue that cropped up with what was supposed to be the stable release of Android 10 for the two 2018 phones was the fingerprint scanner. That was supposed to have been fixed by a minor tweak to the build. Unfortunately, that, too, was put on hold two weeks later because of some other issues that OnePlus didn’t explicitly mention.
The changelog for OxygenOS 10 Beta 2 now reveals and confirms what users have been complaining about. Those include some minor things like an animation lag for the fingerprint scanner. Unstable 5 GHz Wi-Fi connections could also be very annoying at worst but the freezing and rebooting issues are more than just a small matter, especially when you lose data and time from it.
Instead of rolling these fixes out as stable releases, OnePlus is now taking the time to have users thoroughly test them again to make sure all their bases are covered. The beta is available to the public but said public is also encouraged to report issues, which is how these bugs where discovered in the first place. Of course, after the botched stable Android 10 update for the two phones, some might be a bit wary of making that jump.
Hopefully, this delay for last year’s OnePlus phones won’t set back the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T even further. The two are not set to get their Android 10 update until Q2 2020, around the time the next OnePlus phone would be launched. Any later than that increases the chance of the OnePlus 5 being forgotten.
