NVIDIA has recently started rolling out the latest update for its 8-inch SHIELD Tablet, which we just found out comes with a non-insignificant risk of overheating and causing fire. Fortunately, the company is offering out replacement units. To see if you qualify, you first need to have installed the latest software version.
That’s this one, SHIELD TABLET software upgrade 3.1. It bumps the device up from Android 5.1 to 5.1.1. This includes a number of performance improvements and bugfixes.
One change we’re aware of is the inclusion of a Battery section under Settings > About tablet > Status that tells your battery type: Y01 or B01. If yours says Y01, the recall applies to you.
3.1 comes two months after NVIDIA rolled out 3.0, which provided Android 5.1 and a firmware update for the SHIELD controller. Comparatively, the changes here are pretty small.
