As a part of the ‘Go Green in the City 2017’ held at the Schneider Electric headquarters in Paris, two Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee students developed a low-cost earthenware cooling technology named Evacool. The competition was conducted to promote innovative solutions for smarter and energy efficient cities.
Nimisha Gupta and Raja Jain, students of chemical engineering course at IIT Roorkee, have won the competition with their cooling solution.
How Evacool is different?
“The existing cooling solutions like ceiling fan, air cooler and air conditioner are either not impactful enough or are resource-heavy due to which there are limited users, as affordability is the major concern. To overcome all these limitations, we have designed Evacool which is cost-effective, consumes lesser electricity, emits no toxic gases, and hence, is a greener solution too,” said Jain.
The invention was developed with a view on the society’s lower strata — each unit of Evacool costs merely Rs 4,000. It is also effective in reducing the temperature by “10 degrees celsius.” About 19,772 applications from 180 countries were received for the competition. Among the participants, 12 finalists were shortlisted before IIT Roorkee’s team was announced as the winner.
